I’ve been promising grant application materials for a while now, and I thought I’d follow up on my post on publication grants with one on travel grants.
Where can you find travel grants?
As with publication grants, the first place to look for travel grants is close to home. Does your department or university offer any travel grants you can apply for? Hunt around a little bit on your university website, and ask your peers, supervisors, and colleagues. Depending on the way your institution is structured, there may be multiple sources to which you can apply for funding to support travel related to research or conference attendance. More and more universities offer grants targeted at specific groups, or aimed at supporting work on a specific subject.
Another option: ask the institution to which you’re planning to travel! Many libraries, museums, universities, and other institutions offer financial support to researchers who need to visit in order to use their resources. The same goes for academic conferences: they often have small amounts set aside for which graduate students and early-career researchers can apply.
