Welcome back to AMA Q&A, where subscribers can have their most pressing questions answered!

I’ve just gotten a short-term teaching job, but it’s in another country and I don’t know anybody there. It’s also possible that I might end up living there for awhile after my contract ends because of my partner’s work. What can I do to settle in and optimize my chances of getting another job after this new one ends?

(Anon.)

First of all, congratulations on the new gig! I hope you’re excited about the job, and that the move is going smoothly!

Secondly, you’ve come to the right place! I’ve actually moved countries three times for work (four if you count the time I went to Australia for a two-month research fellowship). So I’ve had a lot of experience with the kind of thing you’re asking about.

When it comes to your strategy, you want to break it down into three phases: preparing for your arrival, settling into your new community, and laying the groundwork necessary to bring future opportunities your way.
